WALLS
1993

Once upon a time in a town called Synecdoche
there lived a group of good friends.
They lived close by and their kids played together,
but that's not where this story ends.

They came from all different towns in the country,
  they all had different ways.
Their kids were learning the ways of Synecdoche,
  together most of the days.

Then one day, one of the families decided
they had to stop coming to call.
They took their kids home, and put up a wall.

Behind their wall they gave one final message:
"This place is keeping us down.
We'll live like folks in the place where we came from.
We won't adapt to this town."

Their friends resented the insult and said so.
They'd all been close, after all.
But it made the families think of their hometowns,
and another put up a wall.

  Solo

Before long, the whole town of Synecdoche
  became divided by walls.
Everyone stayed with the ones they resembled
like animals locked in their stalls.

The people thought of the time of their friendships.
It all seemed so far away.
Meanwhile, the children would sneak out of sight
and hop the walls to go play.
