JUST BECAUSE
1992
A stranger approaches you on the street with a grin from ear to ear.
Something about his expression fills you with a quick and irrational fear.
"Sometimes I think that they're all out to get me," you say.
"I get so paranoid I can't stand to continue this way."
The thought of these people all after you has got you so distraught
but just because you're paranoid doesn't mean that they're not.
You're sitting at home with the TV on and you're timidly watching the news
listening to Jennings or Rather sing the environmental blues.
"Sometimes I wonder if the planet will make one more year."
Somehow the knowledge that everyone's worried is making you forget your fear.
The thought of a life without atmosphere has frightened you for so long
but just because you're paranoid doesn't mean that you're wrong.
solo
Awaken with fright in the night to the sound of breathing in the hall.
You lie for a while and decide it was just imagination, that's all.
"Sometimes I'm scared just to sleep in the city at night,
but I know I worry too much, it'll turn out all right."
You're feeling much better, though longing to see the sunrise, even still
but just because you're paranoid doesn't mean that you will
